Markets Assistant


We are seeking a full-time employee to assist Nourish Knoxville’s Markets Manager in the operation of our family of farmers’ markets. Essential functions include: vendor relations/communication, solicitation, & retention; market preparations & operation; at-market customer service & merchandise sales; operation of key at-market programs (SNAP/Double Up Food Bucks, Nourish Moves); market promotion via social media & local television; and collecting & logging market data.

Position Type:

Full-time, 40 hours per week, starting as early as February 15, 2023 and no later than March 31, 2023. In-person position with a Tuesday through Saturday work week.

Required Availability:

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, in-person position with limited remote work options available based on season and demonstrated need. The typical work week for this position is Tuesday through Saturday. Office hours are flexible but farmers’ market (and farmers’ market preparation) dates and times are firm. Holidays excluded. See below for required in-person, at-market availability by season:

  • December through March: Every Saturday, 7:15 am – 3:30 pm
  • April: Every Thursday, 12:45 pm – 7:00 pm
  • May through September:
    • Every Wednesday, 7:45 am – 3:00 pm
    • Every Thursday, 12:45 pm – 7:00 pm
    • Every Saturday, 6:15 am – 3:00 pm
  • October and November:
    • Every Wednesday, 7:45 am – 3:00 pm
    • Every Saturday 6:15 am – 3:00 pm

Please note: 1 – 2 hours on the day before market or the day of market, before market hours, are required to be in-office/on-site for farmers’ market preparations.

Working Conditions:

Most essential functions will occur outdoors at our four farmers’ markets. Temperature and weather conditions may range from below freezing to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and from full sun to heavy rain. Market employees will be required to walk across uneven areas, cart heavy equipment, and be in all weather conditions for extended periods. Other functions will occur in a traditional office setting in downtown Knoxville.

Nourish Knoxville’s Markets Team operates 4 outdoor, producer-only farmers’ markets in Knoxville, TN:

Everything – food, farm, and craft – at our farmers’ markets is grown, raised, and/or made by our vendors within a 150-mile radius of Knoxville, TN. We operate markets year-round, with markets running three days a week May through September.

At each of our farmers’ markets, Nourish Knoxville offers a free kids’ activity (Nourish Kids) once a month as well as SNAP & SNAP doubling (Double Up Food Bucks) services at every market. Additionally, Nourish Knoxville offers a free walking incentive program (Nourish Moves) at our Wednesday Market Square Farmers’ Market and Thursday New Harvest Farmers’ Market every market day.


Nourish Knoxville, Inc. is seeking applicants for our Markets Assistant position to support our Markets Manager in operating our family of farmers’ markets, strengthening vendor relations, and operating key at-market programs (SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks, Nourish Moves) as part of our Markets Team.

Our Markets Team is made up of an AmeriCorps VISTA member (volunteer & nonprofit coordination; Nourish Kids in Knox County), a Markets Manager (farm inspections; vendor relations; organization, operation, and evaluation of farmers’ markets), and a Markets Assistant; all of whom report to Nourish Knoxville’s Chief Operating Officer. The Markets Team is supported by Nourish Knoxville’s Programs Coordinator, City of Knoxville and Knox County staff, summer Event Interns, as well as volunteers.

A successful candidate will enjoy engaging with a diverse range of audiences, be comfortable standing and working outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods, and enjoy working collaboratively with our Markets Team to execute world-class farmers’ market events.

Given the nature of this position’s duties/responsibilities, it has been designated as Exempt under the governing Fair Labor Standards Act regulations and, therefore, is not entitled to formal overtime compensation and/or formal compensatory time. Nourish Knoxville has a generous flextime policy to allow for seasonal workflow.

Essential Functions

Support the Markets Manager in the preparations of our four farmers’ markets including: vendor relations, solicitation & retention; vendor communications; preparation of market sites including chalking/marking vendor stalls; preparation of market tracking documents; packing/(re)stocking market systems and merchandise; and market promotion via social media marketing & local media.

With the assistance of the Markets Manager & AmeriCorps VISTA, operate our four farmers’ markets including: being onsite at all/most markets; pushing and setting up heavy equipment including tents, tables, weights, etc.; enforcing vendor rules & regulations; customer service including answering questions, operating a POS system for merchandise sales, ATM service, and SNAP & SNAP doubling services; operating Nourish Moves at the Wednesday Market Square Farmers’ Market and Thursday New Harvest Farmers’ Market; and day-of social media marketing.

With the assistance of the Chief Operations Officer & Programs Coordinator, ensure timely and accurate market data collection and entry.

Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Hospitality Management, Parks & Recreation, Event Planning/Management, or other relevant field
  • Event management experience
  • Personnel management experience
  • Familiarity with Apple/Mac products
  • Familiarity with Adobe Design Suite – particularly Adobe Illustrator and/or Canva
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds several times each week
  • Ability to push and/or pull to 150 pounds several times each week
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods
  • Ability to bend and lift
  • Ability to be outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods
