Job Opportunity: Markets Assistant


Job Type: Full-time, in-person position at 40 hrs/week with a Tuesday through Saturday work week.

Location: Knoxville, TN

Salary: $37,500 – $40,000 annually

Organization Background: Nourish Knoxville, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization cultivating healthy communities by supporting relationships between local farmers, producers, and the public.

Nourish Knoxville operates four outdoor, producer-only farmers’ markets in Knoxville, TN:

Winter Farmers’ Market (Saturdays, December – March)
New Harvest Farmers’ Market (Thursdays, April – September)
Market Square Farmers’ Market (Wednesdays, May – November)
Market Square Farmers’ Market (Saturdays, May – November)

Everything – food, farm, and craft – at our farmers’ markets is grown, raised, and/or made by our vendors within a 150-mile radius of Knoxville, TN.

At each of our farmers’ markets, Nourish Knoxville offers a variety of programming aimed at increasing fresh fruit and vegetable consumption and increasing revenue for local, small-scale growers and producers. Programming includes a free kids’ activity (Nourish Kids) once a month as well as SNAP & SNAP doubling (Double Up Food Bucks) services at every market. Additionally, Nourish Knoxville offers a free walking incentive program (Nourish Moves) at our Wednesday Market Square Farmers’ Market and Thursday New Harvest Farmers’ Market every market day.


Description: Nourish Knoxville, Inc. is seeking applicants for a Markets Assistant to support our Markets Manager in the operation of our family of farmers’ markets, strengthening market-vendor relations as well as operating key at-market programs (SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks, Nourish Moves) as part of our Markets Team. A successful candidate will enjoy engaging and communicating with a diverse range of audiences, be comfortable standing and working outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods, and enjoy working collaboratively with our Markets Team.

Nourish Knoxville’s Markets Team is made up of an AmeriCorps VISTA member (volunteer & nonprofit coordination; Nourish Kids in Knox County), a Markets Manager (farm inspections; vendor relations and communications; organization, operation, and evaluation of farmers’ markets), and a Markets Assistant; all of whom report to Nourish Knoxville’s Chief Operating Officer. The Markets Team is supported by Nourish Knoxville’s Programs Coordinator, Knoxville City and Knox County staff, summer interns, as well as volunteers.

Given the nature of this position’s duties/responsibilities, it has been designated as Exempt under the governing Fair Labor Standards Act regulations and, therefore, is not entitled to formal overtime compensation and/or formal compensatory time.


Working Conditions: Most essential functions will occur outdoors at our four farmers’ markets. Temperature and weather conditions may range from below freezing to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and from full sun to heavy rain. Market employees will be required to walk across uneven areas, cart heavy equipment, and be in all weather conditions for extended periods. Other functions will occur in a traditional office setting in downtown Knoxville.


Essential Functions:

Support the Markets Manager in the preparations of our four farmers’ markets including: vendor relations, solicitation, & retention; vendor communications; preparation of market site including chalking/marking vendor stalls; preparation of market tracking documents; packing/(re)stocking market systems and merchandise; and market promotion via social media marketing & local media.
With the assistance of the Markets Manager & AmeriCorps VISTA, operate our four farmers’ markets including: being onsite at all/most markets; pushing and setting up heavy equipment including tents, tables, weights, etc.; enforcing vendor rules & regulations; customer service including answering questions, operating a POS system for merchandise sales, ATM service, and SNAP & SNAP doubling services; operating Nourish Moves at the Wednesday Market Square Farmers’ Market and Thursday New Harvest Farmers’ Market; and day-of social media marketing.
With the assistance of the Chief Operations Officer and Programs Coordinator, collect & enter farmers’ market and farmers’ market program data in a timely manner.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Required Availability: This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, in-person position with limited remote work options available based on season & demonstrated need. This position has a *Tuesday through Saturday work week with required availability on farmers’ market (and farmers’ market preparation) dates and times. Holidays excluded. See below for required in-person, at-market availability:

Wednesdays (May – November), 7:45 am – 3:00 pm ET
Thursdays (April – September), 12:45 pm – 7:30 pm ET
Saturdays (May – November), 6:15 am – 3:00 pm ET
Saturdays (December – March), 7:15 am – 4:00 pm ET

* The Markets Assistant’s work week shifts to a Monday through Friday schedule when not scheduled for Saturday market work.


Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Hospitality Management, Recreation, Event Planning/Management, or other relevant field.
Event management experience
Personnel management experience
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Grant writing experience
Agriculture/gardening experience, personal and/or professional

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds several times each week
Ability to push and/or pull to 200 pounds several times each week
Ability to stand or walk for extended periods
Ability to bend and lift
Ability to be outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods
